What Is a Kanmara Lilac Hydrangea?
Kanmara Splendour in Lilac (Hydrangea macrophylla ‘H211906’) is a bigleaf hydrangea grown for its large, rounded mophead flowers in shades of lilac purple and blue.
It is part of the Kanmara Splendour collection, a group of hydrangeas bred especially for growing as premium potted plants. The large flowers are held above dark green foliage, creating a showy flowering plant for the porch, patio, balcony, or other sheltered spot.
Kanmara hydrangeas are commonly sold as decorative flowering plants, which can make it a little confusing to know whether you should treat yours as a houseplant, a patio plant, or a garden hydrangea.

Although you can enjoy a Kanmara hydrangea indoors while it is flowering, it is not a traditional houseplant. Think of it more as a flowering potted plant that can temporarily decorate a bright room indoors or spend the growing season outside on a shaded porch, patio, or balcony.
Kanmara hydrangeas sold as flowering gift plants may be forced to bloom early in the greenhouse so they can be sold in the retail market around holidays such as Easter and Mother’s Day. This means the plant may be flowering earlier than it naturally would if it were growing outdoors in the garden.
Can I Plant Kanmara Lilac Outside?
Yes, Kanmara Lilac is still a bigleaf hydrangea (Hydrangea macrophylla), so it may be planted outdoors where growing conditions are suitable. However, Kanmara hydrangeas are marketed primarily as premium potted and patio plants rather than as landscape hydrangeas.
If you decide to plant yours in the garden, treat it much as you would another bigleaf hydrangea. Choose a sheltered location with moist, well-draining soil and protection from hot afternoon sun. Keep in mind that a hydrangea grown and sold as a flowering potted plant may perform differently once transplanted into the landscape.

How to Care for Kanmara Lilac Hydrangea
Kanmara Lilac is particularly well suited to growing in a container. You can leave your hydrangea in its original nursery pot and slip it inside a decorative planter, or repot it into a slightly larger container with drainage holes and a good-quality potting mix.

Light
Give your Kanmara Lilac hydrangea plenty of bright, indirect light indoors. If you move it outside, place the container in a sheltered location with filtered light, partial shade, or gentle morning sun.
Avoid hot afternoon sun, which can cause the large leaves and flowers to wilt quickly, particularly when the plant is growing in a container.
Water
Keep the potting mix consistently moist, but don't allow the plant to sit in standing water. Potted hydrangeas can dry out surprisingly quickly, especially during warm weather.
If you've placed the original plastic nursery pot inside a decorative container, check after watering to make sure excess water hasn't collected at the bottom.
Soil
If you repot your Kanmara hydrangea, use a rich, well-draining potting mix and a container with drainage holes. Hydrangeas like consistent moisture, but their roots should not remain waterlogged.
Fertilizing
A potted Kanmara hydrangea can be fertilized during active growth with a fertilizer suitable for flowering shrubs or hydrangeas. Follow the product label rather than applying extra fertilizer in an attempt to encourage more blooms.
If you've just brought home a plant that is already covered in flowers, there's no need to immediately start fertilizing it.

Kanmara Lilac does not need regular pruning to maintain its shape. Remove spent flowers as needed, but avoid cutting the plant back hard.
Like other traditional bigleaf hydrangeas, it forms flower buds on older stems, so unnecessary pruning can remove future flowers.
